NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Monday night, a man traveling on his bicycle was tragically hit and killed as he was crossing the intersection of 19th Street and Pike Avenue.
Officials learned that the cyclist was traveling eastbound on 19th Street, and the driver of the vehicle was traveling northbound on Pike Avenue when the accident happened at the intersection of 19th.
Now, members of the community are mourning his loss.
"It was a tragedy. I hate when stuff like that happens. Again condolences to his family, I just really hate stuff like that," said a barber who works along the intersection near Pike Avenue.
North Little Rock police records show that this was the second accident to happen on Pike in the past three years. However only one of the incidents was fatal.
"[There's] always accidents here and so people just need to pay more attention to each other and come together more," he added.
Mayor Terry Hartwick explained that making roads sure that the North Little Rock streets are safe is his top priority.
"With this area here you're talking about five lanes of traffic. I would suggest with five lanes of traffic to take the parallel roads and not get on Pike Avenue," said Mayor Hartwick.
According to the Mayor's office, there are 35 flashing stop signs and 12 flashing bicycle signs near Pike Avenue. They will continue to add more as this part of town continues to grow.
"For six and seven blocks, you have RockWater which is a big development. There's a lot of development going on in this area and a lot of traffic. Everybody be careful please," Mayor Hartwick explained.
The driver remained at the scene of the accident and was interviewed by NLRPD Detectives. However, police have not yet identified the victim in the incident.
